Dansby Swanson’s Return Timeline
The Chicago Cubs anticipate a lineup boost with shortstop Dansby Swanson expected to return before the season wraps up. Swanson was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain diagnosed from an MRI following his early exit from Sunday’s game. The Cubs estimate a one-month recovery for Swanson, potentially allowing him to play the final two weeks of the regular season. Manager Craig Counsell expressed Swanson’s determination to expedite the healing process.
Cubs’ Roster Adjustments
In response to injuries, the Cubs made several roster changes. Right-hander Edward Cabrera joined the 15-day injured list due to a blister issue, prompting the recall of pitcher Javier Assad. Other moves included recalling outfielder Kevin Alcántara, optioning infielder James Triantos, and calling up infielder Owen Miller. Miller’s versatility as a shortstop and first baseman was pivotal in this decision. Daniel Palencia transitioned to the 60-day injured list, freeing up a 40-man roster slot for Miller.
Manager Craig Counsell on Dansby Swanson: “Dansby’s already ready to attack the injury and do whatever he can to make this go as quick as possible. I don’t know if there’s any silver lining to this, but we’ll get Dansby back this year.”
Middle Infield Adjustments
During Swanson’s absence, the Cubs plan to rearrange their infield. Nico Hoerner will cover shortstop duties, while Pedro Ramírez takes on second base. Ramírez has shown promise, boasting a .299 average in 49 games. Matt Shaw’s projected return from a hand/wrist sprain could add depth before Swanson’s comeback.
Cabrera’s Role and Performance
Chicago’s acquisition of Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins hasn’t gone as planned due to recurring blister complications. Cabrera, reverting to a bullpen role, aims to lower stress on his fingers by reducing pitching volume. Though his ERA sits at 5.68 over 15 starts, Cubs remain hopeful for improvement in the coming weeks.
The blister appeared during Cabrera’s last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, resulting in four runs from his efforts. Despite setbacks, Cabrera remains optimistic, committed to supporting the team however he can.
Edward Cabrera: “The important thing is being here and helping the team in whatever way I can. I know they are tough, but they have a purpose.”
Future Considerations
Manager Counsell acknowledges the need for solutions to Cabrera’s blister challenges. Shorter pitching stints may offer a temporary remedy, aiming to smooth Cabrera’s transition within the team. Cabrera’s ability to adapt remains crucial for resolving ongoing issues.
As the Cubs navigate injuries, their focus remains on optimizing player availability and maintaining competitiveness.
