On August 17, 2026, the White House hosted a special visit for a young lifeguard and a rescued boy. Sixteen-year-old Ryder Williams saved 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from a rip current in Santa Cruz, California, last month. Their meeting with President Trump marked a significant moment in the Oval Office.
Williams became well-known online following the incident on July 25. During the rescue, he courageously held onto Nathaniel despite the challenging conditions, bringing him safely to shore. President Trump commended Williams for his daring act and celebrated Nathaniel’s resilience.
“We’re honored to have all of you. And again, what you did was incredible,” President Trump told Williams. “And everybody saw it. And you’d watch it over and over. I know when I first saw it, I said, ‘Roll that back, I want to see that again. Is that really happening?’”
Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed deep gratitude towards Ryder Williams. He stated his son was incredibly close to danger before Williams intervened. Sumit Rai also shared his family’s joy in being able to celebrate Nathaniel’s 11th birthday.
Earlier, in an interview for “CBS Mornings,” Rai mentioned that his son was just moments away from a life-threatening situation when Williams made the crucial rescue. President Trump acknowledged the importance of lifeguards and their often underappreciated role in ensuring safety.
Williams, reflecting on the rescue, emphasized the reliance on training during critical incidents. The young lifeguard expressed aspirations to pursue a career as a firefighter in the future, showcasing his dedication to helping others.
