Buccaneers’ Rookie Garnes Shines in Preseason Game Against Jets

For many players aiming to secure a spot on the team roster, preseason games hold significant importance. They offer opportunities to prove their worth to the coaching staff.

Such was the scenario for the Buccaneers’ cornerbacks during their Friday night matchup against the Jets, with two players notably impacting the game.

Rookie Ayden Garnes, as an undrafted player, lacks the assurance of ample chances to impress. Each play is crucial, and Garnes made every moment count.

In a standout play, Garnes intercepted a pass from Bailey Zappe and returned it for a touchdown. This type of play gathers attention, particularly for a young defensive back looking to secure a position. While a preseason interception is noteworthy, transforming it into a touchdown is even more impactful.

Garnes acknowledges that he must continue proving himself as the Buccaneers finalize their roster decisions. Plays like this interception are essential for gaining visibility with the coaching staff.

“The first thing I thought of was first, just thanking God,” Garnes remarked about the play on WFLA, as reported by the Bucs’ official website. “I got the opportunity to come out here and then make a play like that. That’s all him, that’s all God.”

He continued, “I’m just grateful that I am able to have this team backing me, to give me the opportunity to be on the field, to make that play, and to get back to the sideline and celebrate with my teammates, it’s once of a lifetime.”

While preseason performances do not assure a roster spot, they can be significantly beneficial. Garnes’ performance is a case in point.
