This weekend, two distinct dinosaur-themed films added to the North American box office totals. Despite their efforts, neither film dethroned “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” nor took the second spot from “The Odyssey.”
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “The End of Oak Street” vied for the third position during their initial run. According to studio estimates, the movie starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor slightly edged ahead with a projected $21 million, compared to the animated “Paw Patrol” movie’s $20.5 million. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued to captivate audiences, earning another $70 million, bringing its total to $785.8 million domestically. Globally, it has surpassed $2 billion, becoming the eighth film to achieve this mark.
In its fifth week, “The Odyssey” secured second place, earning $23.2 million for a total of $504.7 million domestically. With additional earnings from international markets, including a successful opening in China, it surpassed $1.2 billion globally.
“The End of Oak Street” exceeded expectations, grossing approximately $21 million from 3,446 locations. It also garnered $26 million from international screenings, summing up to a $47 million global opening against its $80 million production budget. Critics gave it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences were less enthusiastic with a B CinemaScore.
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” distributed by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters, received an A CinemaScore from its family-focused audience. Globally, it accumulated $69 million in total earnings.
Rounding out the top five was “Katseye: Wild Hearts,” which earned $4 million from 724 screens. Other new releases making it into the top ten include “Six: The Musical Live” with $3 million and “The Brink of War” with $2.7 million. The Tamil film “Vishwanath & Sons” took the tenth spot with $1.6 million.
Outside the top ten, the crime thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King” brought in over $1 million, while the biopic “Tony” earned $706,676 in its second weekend. The film is expected to expand its release shortly.
The summer box office reached over $4.2 billion, about 5.7% higher than the pre-pandemic summer of 2019. Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak noted this sum is close to 2013’s record summer of $4.8 billion. He stated this summer could rank among the top five.
The total yearly box office stands just short of $6.9 billion. The estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters are as follows:
