Two contrasting dinosaur-themed films made their mark at the North American box office over the weekend. However, neither managed to dislodge “Spider-Man” from the top, nor could they surpass “The Odyssey” for second place.
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” aimed at younger audiences and “The End of Oak Street,” a PG-13 action film, both vied for third. Studio estimates on Sunday indicated the latter, featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, had a slight lead with $21 million, whereas the animated pups followed closely with $20.5 million.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” maintained its top position, generating $70 million in its third weekend. Its domestic revenue hit $785.8 million, making it the fourth-largest domestic release ever. Globally, with an additional $118.7 million, its total surpassed $2 billion, joining an elite group of films. The movie is only the eighth to reach this milestone, following “Avengers: Endgame,” which did so faster, in 11 days compared to “Brand New Day” taking about 18.
The Continuing Success of “The Odyssey”
In its fifth weekend, “The Odyssey” remained in second place, earning $23.2 million. Domestically, it has brought in $504.7 million. Internationally, it totaled $98 million, bolstered by $36.6 million from its initial days in China, amassing over $1.2 billion globally.
“The End of Oak Street” performed better than anticipated, collecting approximately $21 million from 3,446 locations. Internationally, it earned $26 million, resulting in a $47 million global opening against an $80 million production budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film stars McGregor and Hathaway as parents of the 1980s transported to prehistoric times. Critics gave it favorable reviews, and it holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience response was mixed with a B CinemaScore. Per PostTrak exit polls, slightly more than half of viewers said they would recommend the film.
Family Choices and Newcomers
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters, received an A CinemaScore from its family-oriented audience. Globally, it has accumulated $69 million. The film represents the third theatrical release in the Paw Patrol series since 2021.
The documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” completed the top five with $4 million from 724 screens. Other new releases making the top ten include “Six: The Musical Live” in sixth with $3 million and “The Brink of War” following with $2.7 million. The Tamil romance, “Vishwanath & Sons,” earned $1.6 million, securing the tenth spot.
Meanwhile, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” featuring Matthew McConaughey, earned slightly over $1 million from 632 theaters, landing outside the top ten. The biopic “Tony,” focused on young Anthony Bourdain, garnered $706,676 from 37 theaters and is set for a broader release soon.
Summer Box Office Trends
The summer box office has been robust, generating over $4.2 billion, surpassing pre-pandemic 2019 by 5.7%. Paul Dergarabedian, from Rentrak, noted the summer is only $130 million short of the 2013 record set by “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2.” While reaching 2013 levels might be challenging, he assured that this is among the top five summers recorded.
The year’s box office is approaching $6.9 billion.
