Challenges in Chicago’s Education System

In Chicago, more than 50 schools report that none of their students have achieved math proficiency. This alarming statistic points to the education challenges faced by the city.

The term “wicked problem” is used in social science to describe social issues that seem impossible to resolve due to entrenched power structures. Chicago has often been cited as an example due to its complex political environment. However, efforts have begun to address these deep-seated issues impacting the city’s governance and education system.

Recent rallies and discussions have highlighted the need for reform. On May 1, 2025, Chicago Teachers Union Local 1 President Stacy Davis Gates addressed a crowd during the Nationwide May Day Strong Rally. This event, held in Chicago, focused on empowering workers to challenge powerful entities and demanded changes in education and other civic areas.
