Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, faces a serious legal battle. He has been indicted on two counts of murder following the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their home in Brentwood, California.
On Wednesday, prosecutors informed that a Los Angeles County grand jury had returned an indictment with new ‘special circumstance’ allegations against Reiner. These allegations claim Reiner, aged 32, committed the murders ‘by means of lying in wait,’ which is recognized as a special circumstance under California law. The indictment also includes a multiple-murder special circumstance and accuses Reiner of personally using a knife during the killings.
In California, special-circumstance allegations can heighten the severity of punishment if a defendant is convicted. The Los Angeles Public Defenders office has declined to comment further on the case at this time.
The prosecutors assert that both multiple murders and lying-in-wait tactics were involved, suggesting the killings entailed a calculated surprise or ambush. Officials from Los Angeles County report that the lying-in-wait charge means Reiner now has two special-circumstance allegations against him. Conviction on these charges could result in life imprisonment without parole or possibly the death penalty. Yet, prosecutors have not decided if they will pursue capital punishment.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated that the indictment introduced the lying-in-wait allegation, highlighting it as ‘a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.’
