Swedish singer Matilda Lindell marks her 18th year in showbiz, dazzling audiences in spandex and sequins. She stands as the lead vocalist in “ABBA The Concert,” one of the top ABBA tribute tours worldwide. Lindell brings her tribute to Agnetha Fältskog to Gary for a one-night performance at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.
“It’s been a while since my last performance in Chicago,” Lindell stated from New York. She spoke after her arrival from across the Atlantic, reflecting on the enthusiasm of U.S. audiences. She noted they celebrate ABBA’s music more vocally than even her native Swedish crowds.
“ABBA The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA” has been delighting audiences since 1999. Featuring an all-Swedish cast, it has seen many members pass through. Lindell joined at 26, showcasing her ability to channel either female lead. Frequent touring partners include Elisabet Karlsson and Mia Ternström. Male counterparts resemble the original members, with Martin Håkansson on keyboards and Matte Andersson on guitar.
The 90-minute performance delivers ABBA’s hits like “Mamma Mia,” “S.O.S,” “Money, Money, Money,” and “Dancing Queen.” The “Waterloo” number is a highlight, featuring costumes inspired by the original designer, Owe Sandström. These iconic painted cat costumes capture the ABBA essence with authentic fabrics and distinct styles.
“It’s not about comfort. It’s about authenticity,” Lindell remarked on the costumes.
Original members of ABBA have retired, with ages ranging from 76 to 81. Lindell started performing as a teenager on the Swedish soap “Tre kronor.” Despite her love for touring, Lindell expresses interest in returning to TV and film.
Performing live poses unique challenges, including unexpected fog and haze. Natural fog is preferred by Lindell as it’s gentler on vocal cords. “Every venue offers a different experience,” she said, emphasizing the importance of audience enjoyment.
