The Clacton special election is drawing attention with a record 34 candidates vying for votes. Among them are unconventional candidates like Howling Laud Hope of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White from the Everyone is God Party. These candidates have actively campaigned in Clacton to secure the support of nearly 80,000 voters.
With so many names on the ballot, voters face a complex task. The voting paper stretches to about 3 feet long, making navigation challenging. Turnout is expected to be low, typical for special elections compared to general ones. In the July 2024 general election, Nigel Farage competed against eight rivals, receiving 21,225 votes, or 46.2% of the total. Back then, voter turnout was 58.7%.
This election coincides with the summer holiday season, drawing many voters away from Clacton. It’s also occurring during a U.K. heatwave, which might deter voters from stepping out to polling stations amid soaring temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
Nigel Farage, who finally secured a parliamentary seat in 2024 in the Brexit-leaning town, has been under scrutiny over financial disclosures. Parliament’s standards watchdog is probing an undeclared £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne before Farage’s election. Farage argues it was a personal gift for security expenses and outside the scope of declaration rules.
When Farage resigned on July 7, he called the scrutiny an “establishment hit job” and media “witch-hunt.” His resignation halted the parliamentary inquiry, which might resume if he wins again on Thursday, as polls predict. Should he breach Parliament’s rules, he might face a recall petition, potentially leading to another costly election later.
Farage’s move to trigger a Clacton election came shortly after Andy Burnham’s successful return to Parliament in a Makerfield special election. That event ended with Burnham becoming Britain’s prime minister following Keir Starmer’s resignation.
Expectations for a positive Clacton campaign for Farage faltered when other parties didn’t engage favorably, leaving him with candidates such as Count Binface. Underneath Count Binface’s unique outfit is comedian Jon Harvey, known for running in high-profile elections against figures like Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. His campaigns highlight the openness of Britain’s democracy.
Despite negligible support and costs involved, Binface aims to attract more voters in Clacton, with backing possibly coming from those opposing Farage.
The election results, expected Friday morning, will unveil Farage’s fate along with the support tallied for each candidate.
