Robert Gilman, an American military veteran, has been released from Russian custody and returned to the U.S. after spending four years in prison. Gilman’s release followed talks between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The release was described by Trump as a humanitarian decision with no conditions requiring an exchange.
Robert Gilman, a Massachusetts teacher and former Marine, faced allegations of wrongful incarceration and abuse during his time in Russia. His family and U.S. officials claimed his health deteriorated significantly while imprisoned. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that Gilman expressed gratitude for the release and requested a cheeseburger upon arrival in the U.S. The veteran is expected to receive medical and psychological care at a military hospital in Texas.
Gilman’s incarceration began in 2022 when he was accused of disturbing peace on a train and later charged with assaulting a police officer. His prison sentence was repeatedly extended, reaching a total of ten years by December 2024, after he was convicted of multiple instances of assault against prison staff. Russian media reported his guilty plea and apologies, yet his father disputed these charges and the U.S. deemed the detention wrongful.
Despite his release, concerns remain about other Americans imprisoned in Russia who face similar issues. Five more Americans are held in Russia, with worsening health conditions reported. Senator Marco Rubio urged continued efforts for their release, sharing a photo of Gilman wrapped in an American flag upon his return.
Before his release, Gilman was hospitalized due to severe deterioration in his condition. His lawyer noted that Gilman was kept in a psychiatric ward and remained in a critical state for a prolonged period. This dire situation led the U.S. to intensify efforts for his release. Gilman’s sister, Lexie Hudson, attributed his release to advocacy by Trump and Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey. She expressed deep concern over Gilman’s mistreatment due to his national and military background.
Senator Markey emphasized the urgency of Gilman’s situation, highlighting physical and psychological harm inflicted during his detention. He condemned the abuse and criticized Russia for Gilman’s condition, asserting that collaborative action should have occurred earlier.
