The historic Skokie Theatre, now simply known as The Skokie, has welcomed new ownership by four arts professionals. Jose Pablo Cantillo and Kristi Cantillo, who split their time between Skokie and Greenville, South Carolina, are joined by Chris Matsakis and Monica Matsakis from Glenview. They have ambitious plans for the venue at 7924 N. Lincoln Ave., which has been a centerpiece of local culture since 1912.
Chris Matsakis articulated their shared enthusiasm, saying, “We share a love of live entertainment. All four of us love teaching and working with kids and having a place for the community to go as well as step on stage themselves.” The owners aim to offer a diverse program including comedy, theater, storytelling, improv, music, and jazz. Further ambitions include upgrading equipment for feature films, hosting film festivals, and live podcasts.
“There’s a trend toward younger audiences seeking live experiences,” noted Jose Pablo Cantillo, indicating a shift that supports their vision.
The new ownership officially began on June 29 when they purchased the theater from Wendy Kaplan, planning to reopen it by late 2026. Their efforts are buoyed by a $50,000 grant from the Village of Skokie’s Storefront Enhancement Program. Additionally, they exceeded their online fundraising target by raising $30,365, surpassing their goal of $25,000 on Indiegogo. Matsakis mentioned the campaign will reopen soon to gather more funds for updated film equipment and a large-format screen.
The team brings a wealth of experience. Jose Pablo Cantillo, with acting credits such as “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy,” has also produced titles like “Where Hope Grows.” Kristi Cantillo, with degrees in Fine Arts and Arts Education, has curated ceramics programs in Los Angeles schools. Chris Matsakis, a finance-educated entrepreneur, founded and sold the e-commerce company Deal Genius, while Monica Matsakis has taught storytelling at the Laughing Academy and performed at venues like The Moth.
With this rich tapestry of expertise, the team intends to offer varied entertainment at The Skokie. Cantillo plans to leverage Hollywood connections for one-person and standup shows, enticing younger audiences drawn to live experiences. Chris Matsakis emphasized the unique programming and audience engagement plans.
Physical alterations are planned to enhance visitor experience, including lobby updates and the addition of a bar and lounge. The Skokie’s schedule is not posted yet, but upcoming storytelling events reflect their commitment to diverse programming.
