A 21-year-old Florida man, Gibson Nash, faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly killing his mother, Margaret Chu Dufour, in a series of bewildering incidents. The tragedy unfolded in Polk County, where deputies found Dufour, a 56-year-old nurse, dead in her home.
Authorities had previously encountered Dufour during a ‘disturbance’ at her home involving a moving company. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd explained that the movers tried to overcharge her, and deputies assisted her in completing the move.
On the morning of July 21, Nash was involved in multiple traffic crashes while driving his mother’s blue BMW SUV. He fled the scene of the first crash and subsequently hit several other vehicles, causing injuries to three individuals who required hospital treatment. Deputies discovered Nash unconscious behind the wheel, covered in blood, which puzzled them as the crash itself did not explain the blood.
Nash was taken to a hospital, sedated, and intubated under an unknown identity. Deputies visited Dufour’s residence for more information due to the SUV registration. They found suspicious circumstances, such as a broken glass plate and a shovel, prompting them to enter the house using a key they found on the porch.
Inside, they discovered Dufour’s body, revealing a violent murder marked by blunt force trauma and strangulation. The sheriff described it as one of the most personally violent murders he had ever seen. Dufour and Nash previously lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Nash had been arrested twice in April for threatening to kill his mother.
Dufour relocated to Florida, hoping to secure better mental health treatment for Nash, who is reported to have bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and possible autism. After the crashes, Nash was found with blood on his clothing that matched his mother’s. His hands and feet showed bruising consistent with a violent attack.
Nash, already in liver failure due to a Tylenol overdose, also faces charges for leaving the scene of a crash involving injury. He is currently held without bond.
Nash’s lawyer has refused to allow law enforcement to interview him. Sheriff Judd firmly stated, ‘Gibson Nash needs to remain locked away from the public forever,’ highlighting Nash’s apparent disregard for others and the threat he poses to society.
