A total solar eclipse will occur at Lake Monroe, Indiana, on April 8, 2024. This event will be visible not only in parts of the U.S. but also across Europe. Spectators in Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, Spain, and Portugal will experience a total eclipse when the moon completely obscures the sun.
Conversely, northern U.S. areas, from Alaska to North Carolina, will witness a partial solar eclipse. During this event, the moon imperfectly aligns between the sun and Earth. This alignment causes the sun to appear crescent-shaped. In Washington, D.C., the partial eclipse will begin around 1:17 p.m. ET, with a coverage of 4% according to NASA.
Reykjavík, Iceland, will see the total eclipse begin at 5:48 p.m. local time. In León, Spain, totality will start at 8:28 p.m., lasting for two minutes. The European Space Agency notes this as the first solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905.
Observing solar eclipses requires safety measures. Eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with special filters protect the eyes. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection, even during a partial eclipse. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that viewing the sun without protection can result in serious eye damage, including burns and permanent vision loss.
Beyond being a spectacle for skywatchers, the eclipse presents an opportunity for scientific study. NASA plans to deploy teams using scientific balloons and a high-altitude jet. These tools will assess how a brief darkened sky influences Earth’s atmosphere. “From our unique perspective during a total solar eclipse, scientists can study the Sun’s corona in ways not possible elsewhere,” explained Kelly Korreck, NASA’s eclipse program manager.
Future eclipses are also anticipated. A partial solar eclipse will be visible across certain U.S. areas on August 2, 2027, with totality in Spain, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa. A total solar eclipse will again traverse parts of the contiguous U.S. on August 23, 2044.
