The political influence of President Donald Trump faced scrutiny in Tennessee as voters participated in the state’s first primaries following the redrawing of congressional districts. This redistricting aimed to increase Republican representation in the U.S. House for the upcoming elections.
The results of the primaries indicated mixed outcomes for Trump. In one instance, state Sen. Brent Taylor, endorsed by Trump, secured the Republican nomination for the 9th Congressional District. In contrast, Charlie Hatcher, a former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner, defeated Trump-backed incumbent Rep. Andy Ogles in the 5th District.
Taylor’s win brings him head-to-head against progressive state Rep. Justin Pearson in November. Pearson is part of the ‘Tennessee Three’, a group known for their national profile after a gun control protest in 2023.
Senator Marsha Blackburn achieved a significant victory, winning the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Blackburn aims to become Tennessee’s first female governor. This could pave the way for an additional U.S. Senate appointment.
Following her win, Blackburn expressed her gratitude and commitment to promoting conservative leadership in Tennessee. She emphasized the step taken towards this goal and expressed determination to continue in November.
Meanwhile, Ogles’ defeat highlighted a challenge for Trump. Despite strong support from Trump and other key figures, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Ogles faced strong opposition from the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition. This coalition, primarily funded by Democratic donor Chris Larsen, spent significant resources to support Hatcher against Ogles.
The redistricting in Tennessee also posed challenges for Ogles. The newly drawn 5th District, although made more Republican-friendly, introduced Ogles to a predominantly new GOP electorate.
Overall, Tennessee Republicans restructured the state’s congressional districts, transforming the previously Democratic-controlled 9th District to favor Republicans. This led to Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen not seeking reelection. The redistricting is designed to turn the state’s GOP delegation from 8-1 to a potential 9-0 sweep.
Taylor’s victory in the GOP 9th district primary puts him in a race against Pearson, backed by influential figures on Capitol Hill. The Memphis-area district remains a contested battleground.
Blackburn’s triumph over Rep. John Rose in the gubernatorial primary positions her strongly towards the governor’s office. If elected, she would be trailblazing, representing Tennessee’s first female governor. Her governorship would necessitate vacating her Senate seat, creating another political scenario for succession.
