The Las Vegas Raiders recently drafted Indiana Hoosiers champion and Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza, as their potential future quarterback. This decision highlights the franchise’s long-term plans. However, the team also acquired veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins during the offseason. It remains uncertain when Mendoza will take the starting role.
In a conversation with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Cousins discussed the team’s quarterback dynamics during training camp. He emphasized the positive atmosphere and collaboration in the quarterback room. “Good quarterback room. We’ve enjoyed working together as a group. We have good dialogue every day. The organization is well-positioned, having drafted Fernando,” Cousins noted. “I’m gonna try to hold him off as long as I can. We’ll see how it goes up ahead.”
When Graziano pointed out the dual role Cousins plays in mentoring Mendoza, Cousins responded, “Oh yeah, you can do both. You can do both.” Mendoza enters his rookie NFL season with high expectations, yet having a seasoned player like Cousins can provide valuable guidance and support. This strategy reflects those employed by other teams to gradually transition rookie quarterbacks.
Head coach Klint Kubiak announced last month that Cousins would start the season. It remains to be seen who will begin the preseason and regular season games. “He’s the guy, and he deserves it because he’s played really good football. But I want Fernando and Aidan [O’Connell] to push him,” Kubiak explained.
Cousins appears committed to his role with the Raiders, marking his fourth NFL team since 2012. The four-time Pro Bowler’s experience can benefit Mendoza and contribute to a winning season for Las Vegas. “Honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. You know, I tried to get my mind right for living on Mars when I moved here, and it’s been great. It’s sunny every day. Great culture here. I like my teammates. I like the coaches. I like the system. So, I’m excited now; we just gotta get the ball right and go win some games,” Cousins shared.
Last month, a Fox Sports report highlighted that sportsbooks set the Raiders’ win total at over 5.5 games. Achieving six wins would double their previous season’s total and reflects the optimism around their draft pick Mendoza. The question remains how soon Mendoza will ascend to the starting position with Cousins leading the depth chart.
