The Pentagon has finalized agreements with defense contractors Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. This move aims to increase the production of missile interceptor components.
Production Increase
The agreements will significantly boost the production of PAC-3 and THAAD components. Michael P. Duffey, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, emphasized the importance of robust supply chains. He stated, “Framework agreements with munition components suppliers are crucial for accelerating production increases.”
Current Inventory Challenges
The U.S. military has already used most of its THAAD missile inventory. Almost half of its Patriot interceptors have been expended as well. Currently, the inventory includes approximately 452 THAAD and 2,200 Patriot missiles, based on a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell assured that the military remains well-equipped. He noted successful operations have been executed across various commands.
Concerns Over Military Readiness
High usage of interceptors against Iran has raised readiness concerns. The need to address potential threats from other regions is becoming critical. Northrop Grumman’s Ben Davies highlighted investments in manufacturing technologies. These investments facilitate rapid production increases when necessary.
