Tractor Supply is poised to close approximately 75 of its over 200 Petsense stores across 17 states as part of a strategic business restructuring. The aim is to redirect resources to areas promising higher growth and returns.
In an earnings call, CEO Hal Lawton emphasized that the focus is on enhancing profitability by concentrating on stronger performing segments of the business. The decision follows reports of negative cash flow from the stores set to close. Lawton expressed optimism that the remaining Petsense stores will form a profitable segment, complementing the overall pet ecosystem Tractor Supply is developing.
Following the announcement, specific stores intended for closure were not immediately disclosed. However, investment firm Gordon Brothers has now posted over 70 Petsense locations available for lease as part of the wind-down process. This firm also had involvement in Big Lots’ bankruptcy proceedings.
A representative from Tractor Supply confirmed the closure of the listed locations, with stores remaining operational for an eight to ten-week wind-down period.

Tractor Supply’s acquisition of Petsense took place in 2016 for $116 million. The then-CEO, Greg Sandfort, remarked that Petsense was an ideal addition to Tractor Supply’s retail operations. Earlier in 2023, Tractor Supply expanded its pet care services by acquiring VIP Petcare, operating in-store veterinary clinics. Additionally, they partnered with Instacar for the delivery of pet products.
