The 2026 report from World Population Review highlights the most dangerous animals in each U.S. state. It reveals an array of threats ranging from large mammals like moose to surprising risks such as dogs and jellyfish.
Snakes as Predominant Threats
Snakes are the leading threat nationwide, with rattlesnakes notably dominating. The pygmy rattlesnake is the primary concern in Georgia, while Oklahoma fears the western pygmy rattlesnake. California’s biggest reptilian threat is the southern Pacific rattlesnake, whereas the western diamondback is the deadliest in Arizona. Other states with significant rattlesnake threats include North Dakota (prairie rattlesnake), Nevada (Mojave rattlesnake), and Michigan (eastern massasauga).
Non-Rattlesnake Reptilian Dangers
Louisiana deals with the eastern diamondback snake, and Mississippi’s primary danger is the cottonmouth snake. Indiana faces the eastern copperhead, while the southern copperhead is South Carolina’s main concern. The yellow-bellied sea snake poses risks in Hawaii, highlighting diverse snake threats across the nation.
Canines and Other Animals
Despite being household pets, dogs are the most concerning in Alaska. Coyotes lead threats in Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Utah. Although snakes dominate in 14 states, canine dangers are notable in five states.
Insects and Marine Hazards
Insects and marine creatures also pose significant threats. Wasps are a concern in Iowa, ticks in Missouri, mosquitoes in New York, and black widow spiders in Alabama and Nebraska. Along the coast, the Portuguese man o’ war, a jellyfish-like creature, is a major threat in Delaware and North Carolina. Marine threats affect five states, showcasing the varied nature of animal-related dangers.
Large Mammal Risks
Large mammals are significant threats in several states. Moose pose dangers in Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Black bears are the deadliest in Tennessee and Wisconsin, while mountain lions are the main concern in New Mexico. Grizzly bears threaten Idaho, Montana, and Washington, and bison are the most dangerous in South Dakota and Wyoming. Surprisingly, whitetail deer are the deadliest animals in Arkansas, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Regional Highlights
Tiger sharks are the deadliest in Rhode Island, with bull sharks posing the greatest threat in Maryland and Virginia. Alligators are a significant concern in Florida and Texas, particularly the American alligator in Florida. This report highlights geographical differences in animal threats across the United States.
