Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher reiterated his previous remarks about his willingness to change his vote in upcoming elections, citing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s drift towards radical socialist ideals. Maher voiced these opinions during his show, HBO’s ‘Real Time,’ expressing concern about the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) influencing the broader party.
Maher emphasized the need for awareness, saying, “Yes, my vote is in play. I’m not voting for anyone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War or cheers for the intifada like it’s the World Cup.”
During the show, Maher mocked the seeming inconsistency of a party that opposes colonization yet faces ideological colonization itself. He highlighted the efforts of two congressional Democrats, Rep. Tom Suozzi from New York and Rep. Adam Gray from California, who initiated a pledge calling for moderation within the party amidst growing DSA views.
“Last month, two Democratic congressmen released an open pledge,” Maher informed the audience. “It stated, ‘We are capitalists, not socialists. We want safety, not lawlessness. We are proud, not ashamed of America.’ These statements shouldn’t be difficult for a Democrat in Congress to support. Yet only eight members signed it out of 212.”
Maher acknowledged that while the DSA platform garners attention within the party, most mainstream Democrats do not align with extreme leftist positions. The concern, however, remains that influential voices promoting anti-police, anti-prison, and open border policies are gaining traction.
This discussion followed Maher’s remarks to ABC News regarding his dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s current direction, stating that his vote remains flexible as long as Trump is not a candidate.
Former state attorney Dave Aronberg shared similar views, suggesting that the DSA’s platform may hinder a Democrat surge in the polls, asserting that elections cannot be won with far-left ideologies outside of heavily liberal areas.
Christian Toto, host of The Hollywood in Toto Podcast, added insights about Maher, highlighting his intellectual honesty compared to other liberal comedians, who he claims support the Democratic Party’s modern stance without question.
Maher concluded the episode by referencing former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, humorously indicating he might prefer her as a candidate over current DSA-aligned individuals in his party.
