Kyle Whittingham, after 22 seasons with Utah, has taken on a new challenge with the Michigan Wolverines. Despite his experience, he faces what could be the most crucial game of his coaching career in November.
Whittingham stepped into his role at Michigan following the departure of Sherrone Moore. This transition introduces him to a level of rivalry Michigan fans hold high, particularly with Ohio State.
“I haven’t learned much more than I already knew. It’s a national game. Everybody knows about it,” Whittingham mentioned at Big Ten Media Day. “It’s of great importance to both sides. But I’m an old-school coach. We have 11 games before that, so we won’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Whittingham acknowledged the significance of the rivalry. He understands its national importance and hopes the 12th game against Ohio State determines the Big Ten championship.
When asked if he’s learned to “hate” Ohio State, Whittingham responded, “Hate’s a strong word.” He expressed his desire for victory in that pivotal matchup.
The rivalry between these teams is intense. In 2024, Michigan upset second-ranked Ohio State despite being heavy underdogs, leading to a post-game conflict and intervention by police. Ohio State had the last say by clinching the national title later that season.
With Ohio State snapping a four-game losing streak to Michigan last November, tensions continue. Whittingham will soon immerse himself in this storied competition.
