Demetrius Byrd, former wide receiver for LSU, has found himself in legal trouble following an incident on a Miami bus. Byrd was arrested after reportedly engaging in a heated dispute with a fellow passenger and threatening them with a blade.
According to a report from the New York Post, Byrd asked the passenger, “Who wants to die?” The situation escalated as Byrd allegedly shouted at other passengers. The individual he argued with attempted to calm him, prompting Byrd to allegedly brandish the weapon.
Records indicate Byrd faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in custody on a $5,000 bond. In addition to this charge, Byrd has an outstanding domestic violence warrant.
Byrd made a name for himself in college football with a memorable game-winning catch against Auburn in 2007. At that time, LSU was behind 24-23 when quarterback Matt Flynn connected with Byrd for a crucial 22-yard touchdown catch. This play helped lead LSU to secure the national championship that year.
Despite being a promising NFL prospect, Byrd’s career took a turn for the worse after a serious car accident just before the NFL draft. He sustained critical injuries and was subsequently drafted in the seventh round by the San Diego Chargers but never played a game.
During his college career at LSU, Byrd achieved 72 receptions, totaling 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns over 27 games.
