Billy Ray Smith Jr., a pivotal figure in the San Diego Chargers’ defense during the 1980s, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 64. He battled dementia related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
During his 10-year NFL career, Smith played exclusively for the Chargers. Drafted fifth overall in the 1983 NFL Draft, he was the first defensive player selected that year. His college career at Arkansas was distinguished, receiving unanimous All-America honors twice, setting a record for tackles for loss, and earning induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
The son of NFL linebacker Billy Ray Smith Sr., Smith emerged as a key player for the Chargers’ defense. He participated in 140 games from 1983 to 1992. His achievements include 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, and 14 fumble recoveries. Smith earned second-team All-AFC and second-team All-Pro honors twice in 1985 and 1986. In 1989, he gained All-Pro recognition. He was voted the Chargers’ Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986, team MVP in 1987, and later acknowledged as one of the franchise’s 50 Greatest Players.
Smith’s family revealed he died peacefully among loved ones, facing dementia caused by CTE with bravery and dignity.
After retiring in 1992, Smith remained in San Diego, transitioning into broadcasting. His voice and presence became familiar to local sports fans. Smith worked as a sports anchor for KGTV, contributed to Chargers preseason broadcasts, analyzed college football for Fox Sports, and co-hosted “The Scott and B.R. Show” on XX Sports Radio 1090, a popular regional sports talk program.
Beyond football, Smith was a husband, father, and community figure. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Hunt, a KGTV anchor, and their family. Smith’s legacy for Chargers fans spans two careers: as a skillful linebacker and as a broadcaster synonymous with football in the city.
