We reached out to Essential California readers to get their views on daylight saving time. Paul C. responded positively, saying it gives him “more time to do my work and enjoy life.” However, many expressed a preference for standard time.
My colleague, Rong-Gong Lin II, explained that if daylight saving time were permanent, Los Angeles would experience sunrises as late as 8 a.m. Sacramento and San Francisco would see sunrises at 8:24 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. Crescent City would start the day with a sunrise at 8:44 a.m. This could lead to commuting in morning darkness, a concern for many.
“While DST all year might be better than switching, it is still less healthy than standard time,” said Jean W. She highlighted safety concerns for commuting in the dark under DST.
Susan H. stated, “What do I like about Daylight Saving Time? NOTHING.” She advocates for returning to standard time year-round.
Diane G. mentioned, “We are ‘wired’ to sun time, aka ‘standard time.’… The only benefit to daylight saving is for those who want ‘an extra hour’ after work.”
Gaby D. prefers standard time, enjoying the alignment with the earth’s natural rhythm.
Daylight Saving Time vs. Standard Time
Permanent daylight saving time would mean longer evenings, with Los Angeles sunsets at 5:44 p.m. post-Thanksgiving. San Francisco would enjoy its earliest sunsets at 5:51 p.m. in late November.
However, staying on standard time, permissible by federal law, would mean shorter days during California’s summer.
Rep. Nanette Barragán plans to vote against a permanent DST bill, citing health concerns. She supports the Sunshine for Our Kids Act, favoring permanent standard time, endorsed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
