A fourth firefighter has died from burn injuries sustained while battling the Knowles wildfire in western Colorado. Nathan Matthews, 43, from Lincoln, Nebraska, succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy expressed sorrow over the loss, highlighting the deaths of Matthews and three others in the same incident. Raging flames and intense wind conditions contributed to the dangerous situation. Five firefighters faced a burnover, where the fire rapidly spreads and cuts off escape routes, during initial operations.
The Knowles Fire, which began near Knowles Canyon in Mesa County, merged with the Snyder Fire from Utah, impacting the Colorado-Utah border. The Snyder Fire, named by the Department of the Interior, has consumed over 28,000 acres.
The three other firefighters, Emily Barker (38), Nick Hutcherson (27), and Sydney Watson (27), were part of the Rifle Helitack crew involved in initial attack efforts. They lost their lives at the scene, as per official statements.
Chief Fennessy shared, “We mourn the loss of Nate while continuing to grieve the deaths of Emily, Nick, and Sydney. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, crewmates, and all affected by this tragedy.” Matthews had been receiving medical treatment for his injuries prior to his death.
The fifth firefighter’s identity remains undisclosed. Chief Fennessy reaffirmed their commitment to support those impacted and honor the legacy of the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in service.
