Grant Cancellations Linked to Politics
Federal green grants were canceled last year, with the Trump administration acknowledging that the decisions were based on political reasons. According to a court filing, the Department of Energy (DOE) identified 624 grants for potential termination.
Jeff Novak, a DOE lawyer, stated that the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) chose 284 of these grants for cancellation.
Novak revealed that almost all these grants were linked to states that supported then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, along with two Democratic-affiliated senators. He added that the other 340 grants remained unaffected.
Novak’s filing confirmed that political motivations drove the inclusion of grants on the cancellation list. He clarified that these decisions were not influenced by programmatic, legislative, cost-efficiency, or performance criteria. Additionally, the original DOE list did not factor in political affiliations.
