In light of ongoing tensions in the Middle East, synagogues and Jewish centers in New York remain vigilant for possible threats. Magen Am, a Jewish nonprofit dedicated to community security, plays a significant role.
A suspect has been detained after two men were stabbed on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in attacks described by officials as seemingly antisemitic. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that one of the victims is Jewish. Witnesses stated the attacker shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during both incidents.
Investigators are determining if these should be classified as hate crimes. Raul Morales, 51, is identified in connection with both assaults.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that detectives are working on the case to confirm motives. Witnesses and victims noted that Morales yelled during the attacks.
Despite overall crime reductions, antisemitic incidents in NYC have nearly tripled. The stabbings occurred near West 84th Street and Central Park West, a predominantly Jewish area.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who recently called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referred to the stabbings as ‘horrifying.’
The victims were identified as an Asian man and a Jewish man. Witnesses confirmed the phrase ‘Allahu Akbar’ was shouted during both attacks. The NYPD’s quick response led to Morales’ arrest.
Both attacks happened close together. A 57-year-old man was stabbed near West 84th Street and Central Park West around 1:30 p.m. He was found conscious with a stab wound to his back and was hospitalized in stable condition. Soon after, a 50-year-old man was discovered nearby with a torso injury and was similarly hospitalized.
Preliminary findings suggest mental health might play a role; however, Morales has no known mental health history with the NYPD.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed anger at the antisemitic nature of the attacks and emphasized the fear within the Jewish community.
Menin stressed unity in opposing antisemitism and commended the NYPD’s quick response. Assembly member Micah Lasher, representing the area, stated communication with both the police and community about the assaults and expressed hopes for the victims’ recovery.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the attacks as senseless acts against New Yorkers because they are Jewish. Hochul emphasized New York’s strength in diversity and promised legal action against those who challenge it.
Mamdani’s office and the FBI didn’t immediately provide further comments. Updates on the situation are expected as the investigation progresses.
