NFL Players Advocate for Grass Over Turf Post-World Cup

As the World Cup concludes, NFL players express a strong preference for playing on grass fields. The contrast emerges because seven of the 11 U.S. World Cup venues, which included NFL stadiums, switched to grass as per FIFA’s requirements. This has led to players questioning why the NFL cannot do the same.

The NFLPA humorously mentioned the irony of ‘green carpets’ for soccer, while taking the issue seriously, advocating for player safety as part of their ‘#WorthTheCost’ campaign.

“I think it’s going to be hard for them to argue against that,” Saquon Barkley shared with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the inconsistency in field standards.

Barkley admitted a lack of complete understanding of the injury statistics on both surfaces but stated his preference for grass. He believes that if research supports that grass fields are safer, this should guide league decisions.

Despite Barkley’s personal experiences of significant injuries on grass, half the NFL stadiums still favor turf. This is often attributed to cost and maintenance considerations, as these venues host numerous events annually.

In preparation for future standards, the NFL announced that teams will receive a library of accredited field options by 2026. While new fields must meet these criteria, there remains no requirement to shift exclusively to grass.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer, stated there is no clear evidence linking injury rates to the type of playing surface, challenging the widespread player sentiment that favors grass.

The debate continues as players like Barkley and others maintain their stance, influenced by personal experience and preference despite the current data and league policies.
