For years, Samsung’s foldable device lineup included only two models: the Fold and the Flip. However, the recent Galaxy Unpacked event in London marked a significant shift. Samsung now offers three distinct foldables, each catering to different users’ needs. The new lineup consists of the Galaxy Z Fold8, the Fold8 Ultra, and the Flip8, each designed for specific user preferences.
The Fold8: A Versatile Media Device
The Galaxy Z Fold8 appeals to those who value media consumption. Weighing 201g, it is Samsung’s lightest Fold device to date. The display ratio is tailored for different content types throughout the day. The 10:16 cover screen is ideal for quick social and messaging use, while the main 4:3 display is suitable for gaming and video. The device is also optimized for long-form reading. It features a 4,800mAh battery and dual 50MP rear cameras and starts at £1,699 for the 256GB model.
Fold8 Ultra: The Premium Choice
The Fold8 Ultra, at a thickness of 4.1mm when unfolded and weighing 215g, carries the first “Ultra” designation in Samsung’s foldables. It boasts an 8.0-inch main display and a high-performance camera system, including a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultra-wide, and 10MP 3x telephoto. The device supports 8K video shooting with the APV codec, powered by a 5,000mAh battery and 45W charging. Priced at £1,899, it is positioned as a high-spec option, reflecting Samsung’s belief in the luxury mindset of their customers.
Flip8: A Focus on Portability and Style
The Flip8 stands out with its lightweight and compact design, weighing 180g and measuring 6.1mm when unfolded. It runs on the Exynos 2600 chip, equipped with a 4.1-inch FlexWindow cover display. This AI-native interface provides personalized content and supports Gemini-powered automations. The Flip8 includes a 50MP main camera and Super Steady video, starting at £1,149.
Market Context and Future Prospects
Samsung’s latest strategy aligns with market forecasts, which predict a 21% growth in the foldable segment by 2026. However, Apple is expected to enter the foldable market, potentially affecting Samsung’s share. According to analyst Liz Lee, Apple’s presence might increase consumer awareness, pushing premium standards upwards. Samsung’s advantage lies in product maturity and experience.
Counterpoint Research indicates a trend toward higher selling prices in the foldable sector, with premium devices likely to dominate. Samsung’s introduction of an Ultra tier reflects an expectation of high-end demand.
Pre-orders for all three devices are open now, with availability starting August 7. Samsung provides a six-month Google AI Pro trial and enhanced compatibility with Apple devices via Smart Switch and Quick Share.
