President Donald Trump announced that the new Air Force One plane, a gift from Qatar, will soon receive security upgrades. There have been ongoing discussions about its security capabilities. Following his attendance at the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, Trump responded to reporters’ inquiries regarding the aircraft’s missile-defense features.
“It has a lot of capability,” Trump commented about the jet, which he began using earlier this month. He mentioned that the aircraft will go through enhancements soon. “In about a month or so, they’re gonna send it to have it be maxed out… It’ll take about a month,” he stated, without providing specific details on the upgrades.
The decision to switch from the Qatari-donated plane after returning from a NATO summit in Turkey sparked media interest and speculation over the readiness of the new Air Force One. Despite rumors, Trump dismissed any security concerns, noting, “You know the life of a president is very dangerous.” He acknowledged his heightened profile, saying, “I’m No. 1 on the kill list for Iran.” Reports from NBC News indicated that the Secret Service recommended the use of a different aircraft when departing from Turkey, noting increased risks due to the regional proximity and recent U.S. tensions with Iran.
Additionally, four journalists from the New York Times were recently subpoenaed by the Justice Department. This followed their reports on security issues related to the new Air Force One. The Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, characterized by a superluxury design, was gifted by Qatar’s royal family and is meant to serve as the interim Air Force One while waiting for the new models, scheduled for completion in 2028.
In June, Trump received the aircraft publicly at Joint Base Andrews. The jet’s fresh design features a red, white, and dark-blue color scheme, contrasting with the prior lighter blue model. Trump described it as a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before,” emphasizing its unmatched opulence. He utilized the aircraft for a trip to North Dakota on July 1 for an event commemorating Theodore Roosevelt.
