A mass shooting occurred in Tucson, Arizona, injuring nine individuals, according to the police.
Officers on the scene shot and injured a suspected gunman, who was subsequently hospitalized with critical injuries.
The incident began around 2 a.m. on Sunday. Officers patrolling nearby heard gunshots in the 100 block of East Congress Street, a downtown area famous for its nightlife, bars, and restaurants.
“Those officers immediately began running toward the sound of the gunfire, and in doing so they came upon the suspect,” stated Frank Magos of the Tucson Police Department at a news conference on Sunday.
Magos reported that officers issued several commands to the suspect before one officer discharged a firearm. No officers were harmed.
The officers provided aid to all nine wounded individuals at the scene before they were transported to the hospital. Magos mentioned that many of the victims sustained injuries to their extremities, and all victims were adults.
Police are seeking assistance from the public for further information, emphasizing that the area remains an extensive crime scene.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will oversee the investigation into the shooting. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact the 88-CRIME tip line.
