Iglesias stated, “I don’t want to go to prison,” when discussing a handshake with Trump, according to All Out Soccer. He continued, “I hope to greet him at a moment where everyone’s joyful, and that it passes swiftly so I can move on.” He remarked that this was not the time to cause controversy, as people are already aware of his opinions. While eager to do many things, he admitted limitations in his influence over certain matters.
Iglesias has previously voiced support for pro-Palestinian demonstrators and criticized the former head of the Spanish soccer federation, who resigned following a controversial incident during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Regarding President Trump, Iglesias commented on Trump’s difficulty with those advocating “for progress and fundamental values.” The former president plans to attend the World Cup final and will participate in the trophy presentation, a role he held for the FIFA Club World Cup. Trump was present during the celebration ceremony as well.
