This year presents a unique scenario. The American League is highly competitive, creating a jumble of contenders, making it challenging to determine which teams will sell. Hoyer highlighted the need for patience, stating, “We’ve got to wait, we’ve got to get closer to the deadline.”
Past Experience Shapes Present Decisions
Reflecting on 2023, the Cubs appeared likely sellers. However, a winning streak changed their fortunes, bringing them back into playoff contention. They retained key player Cody Bellinger and acquired third baseman Jeimer Candelario, ultimately missing the wild-card spot by a single game.
Currently, the Cubs hold the top wild-card spot, trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by five games in the NL Central. Hoyer expressed optimism: “We’ve put ourselves in a good position.” While open to position-player trades, the focus remains on strengthening the pitching staff.
Injury Updates and Potential Returns
Injuries have plagued the Cubs’ rotation. Starter Jameson Taillon, sidelined with a hamstring injury in early June, is set to return next week. Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed Taillon’s activation for the series against the Detroit Tigers starting Monday.
Pitcher Edward Cabrera is recovering from a left hamstring/adductor strain, preparing for a return in mid-August. Lefty reliever Hoby Milner aims for an early-August comeback after an appendectomy.
Closer Daniel Palencia, rehabbing a flexor strain, may return by mid-August. Justin Steele, a starting pitcher, is progressing steadily, but requires a longer ramp-up due to his long absence.
Position Players and Trade Implications
Third baseman Matt Shaw’s wrist sprain remains unresolved, affecting his ability to bat. Hoyer emphasized that potential returns from injuries will not influence trade dealings. Recognizing the importance of a robust roster, he remarked, “You can never have too much pitching and you never have enough.”
