Struggles with Inflation
Liesl Gatcheco shared with The Seattle Times that the past year has meant a significant reduction in their household spending. They feel they’ve been in survival mode emotionally.
Statistics show that inflation in Seattle remains higher than in other parts of the U.S. Consumer prices in the region rose by 4.5% over the past year, surpassing the national inflation rate of 3.5%. Gatcheco, a self-employed esthetician, finds her income declining as fewer clients make bookings. Her husband, a Microsoft employee, faces job insecurity as the company recently laid off thousands of workers.
Owning a home and working in tech once meant stability. Yet Gatcheco and her husband, parents to twins, are selling their property to regain financial control.
Impact on Local Residents
The cost of living in Seattle is forcing some to leave. Residents, such as Dusty Wilson, a math teacher, adapt by driving less and using public transit as gas prices soar.
Restaurant food costs have also risen by 6.2% in the past year. This has made dining out feel like an indulgence for many, including tech professionals like Veronica Brown. While she isn’t financially strained, Brown refrains from ordering takeout due to added costs.
City’s Response
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s office acknowledges the challenges of affordability and inequality. Efforts by the administration include banning certain fees imposed by landlords, accelerating shelter construction for homelessness, and expanding access to public benefits.
Plans also involve enhancing public transit options and improving access to public libraries. The Mayor’s office remains focused on ensuring Seattle continues to be a home for all its residents.
