As a blazing heat wave ravaged the Eastern United States in early July, I contacted an old friend. He resides in Northern England, where a heat dome had already enveloped much of Europe. The heat there was historic; the country experienced its hottest day on record shortly before our interaction. This record was surpassed on the day we spoke and broke once more the next day. These patterns indicate a troubling trend.
