Senator Mitch McConnell, age 84, has been in the hospital since June 14. The situation has sparked speculation about his health. Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky sent a letter on Wednesday demanding clarity for constituents concerned about the Republican senator’s condition.
Mr. McConnell was hospitalized after medics were called to his Washington address, responding to reports of an unconscious individual. Shortly thereafter, CPR was reportedly in progress.
Details about his hospitalization and treatment have not been disclosed by his staff. On Tuesday, several Republican figures mentioned brief conversations with Mr. McConnell, each lasting about 20 minutes.
In his letter, Gov. Beshear emphasized the public’s growing concern regarding Mr. McConnell’s health and capability to serve. Beshear, a Democrat serving his second term, stressed the importance of transparent communication with constituents.
Beshear is a growing influence in the Democratic Party and is anticipated to run for president in 2028. His message has also brought focus to a 2021 Kentucky law about U.S. Senate vacancy appointments, stipulating that any appointee must be chosen from a list offered by the senator’s political party’s committee.
Beshear vetoed the law change, deeming it an improper restriction on gubernatorial powers, but the veto was overridden by the state’s Republican-led legislature. As of now, this legal change hasn’t been challenged.
Mr. McConnell’s hospitalization marks another health episode for him, following February’s week-long hospitalization due to flulike symptoms. Earlier, in 2023, he suffered a concussion in a fall, leading to hospitalization and rehabilitation. Recently, he used a wheelchair for certain distances, although days before his latest hospitalization he was seen walking independently.
