On July 3, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, Jaime Santiago Corona, was involved in a fatal crash in North Carolina while driving with a revoked license. Corona’s Dodge Ram pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to a collision with an SUV in Pitt County. The SUV was driven by 35-year-old Kelli Toler, who was traveling with her two children.
The incident resulted in the death of 6-year-old Calli Toler. Kelli Toler and her 4-year-old child suffered serious injuries and were taken to ECU Health Greenville. This tragic event occurred as the family was headed to lunch followed by a visit to a swimming pool.
Corona, who has been deported from the United States three times, faces several charges. These include misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving while a license is revoked. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) highlighted that the tragedy was preventable.
Corona’s criminal record includes charges of negligent manslaughter with a vehicle, multiple counts of police obstruction, DUI, failure to appear in court, and numerous traffic violations. He illegally re-entered the U.S. on three occasions, which constitutes a felony. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer hold, with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office confirming cooperation with ICE.
