President Trump expressed his opinion regarding the World Cup incident involving U.S. Men’s National Team player Folarin Balogun. Trump contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s one-game suspension following a red card.
Balogun faced suspension for stepping on the right ankle of Tarik Muharemović during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. FIFA later reversed the decision, which has sparked criticism and prompted an appeal.
“I saw the play,” Trump stated in the Oval Office. He argued that Balogun’s action was not a foul. “It was two athletes running at full speed and colliding,” he explained. Trump emphasized his love for sports and understanding of athletic rules.
Trump criticized the referee’s decision, describing the official’s past behavior as “suspect.” Despite his discomfort with creating controversy, Trump highlighted that even opposing fans felt lucky with the initial call.
Initially unfamiliar with the red card’s implications, Trump learned it barred Balogun from the next game. He argued this was “very unfair” given the circumstances of the play.
Trump confirmed his discussion with Infantino, stating, “I requested a review because I didn’t think it was a foul.” He emphasized he didn’t guide Infantino’s actions nor did he take credit for FIFA’s subsequent decision.
Infantino addressed the situation in a statement, asserting FIFA’s judicial bodies operate independently. “Yes, I spoke with President Trump, as I do with various global leaders on diverse topics,” Infantino said. He outlined that the case was under review by FIFA’s legal entities, adhering to their procedural norms.
