Mamdani’s Wife Chooses Wellness Retreat Over America’s 250th Anniversary

Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, came under scrutiny during the Fourth of July celebrations for reportedly attending an Islamic spiritual wellness retreat in Mallorca, Spain, rather than participating in America’s 250th anniversary events. The controversy arose as the nation marked this significant milestone.

According to the New York Post, Duwaji was seen at Newark International Airport before flying to Palma for a sold-out retreat organized by The Women Sanctuary. Councilwoman Joann Ariola expressed her disappointment, criticizing Duwaji’s decision and remarking on her perceived disdain for America.

“Nothing says ‘America 250’ quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation,” Ariola stated to The Post.

Councilman Frank Morano also commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of the anniversary and expressing regret over Duwaji’s absence. He stated that while officials’ families can take vacations, this was a crucial moment to be present for both the city and country.

“No one is saying elected officials and their families can’t take vacations, but this was a moment to show up for the city and for the country, and she missed it,” Morano said.

The incident drew reactions from Republican members who saw it as a missed opportunity for engagement. Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler posted pictures of Duwaji at a United Airlines gate, criticizing her timing given her husband’s recent public advice to New Yorkers about energy conservation.

The event Duwaji attended, “Plants Of The Quran | 6th Edition,” focused on plants mentioned in the Quran and included workshops, meals, and spiritual reflection. The retreat promoted an understanding of olives, pomegranates, dates, and figs.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mamdani remained in New York City, facing a heat wave and participating in America 250 events. His office highlighted initiatives like expanding cooling centers and extending pool hours, demonstrating the city’s commitment to handling the heat.

Fox News Digital attempted to get a response from the mayor’s office but had not received any comment at the time of reporting. Duwaji traveled without the security detail typically provided by the NYPD.
