Increasing Risks of Drones Near Airports
Cheryl Casone from FOX Business highlighted the escalating dangers associated with drones near airports. Recently, a JetBlue flight was hit by a drone close to JFK Airport, while a helicopter narrowly missed a large toy airplane. A key concern is the lack of transponders in drones, making them difficult to monitor.
The FAA has initiated a public safety campaign, receiving nearly 100 complaints each month and imposing fines of up to $100,000 for interference. This initiative is crucial for addressing drone-related safety issues.
Delta Air Lines Flight Incident on July 4th
On the Fourth of July, Delta Air Lines Flight 1076 encountered a fireworks mortar strike while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport. The flight, which departed from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, safely landed at Midway at 8:30 p.m. local time.
The Airbus A319 was carrying 52 passengers and six crew members. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Delta confirmed that the flight landed smoothly and taxied to the gate without declaring an emergency.
Despite initial reports of minor paint damage, Delta stated that mechanics found no significant damage during their post-flight inspection.
Ongoing Investigation
The FAA is set to investigate this incident. Chicago police initially reported slight damage, prompting further inspections to ascertain the extent of harm.
Authorities are still trying to determine the origin of the fireworks and identify those responsible for the launch. Delta has promised full cooperation with the FAA and other agencies involved in the investigation.
For additional details, inquiries were directed to the Chicago Department of Aviation and the Chicago Police Department.
