A tragic incident unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri, when a mother of five, Shakeela Martin, 35, was fatally shot while purchasing slushies with two of her young children. Gunfire erupted outside a BP gas station at the intersection of South Florissant and Woodstock roads just before midnight, leaving investigators searching for the shooter.
Police report that the altercation began inside the convenience store and spilled into the parking lot, where Martin became an innocent bystander in the crossfire. She had stopped at the gas station to buy frozen drinks for her children, ages 9 and 6, when shots were fired as she returned to her vehicle.
Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle commented, “She was here to purchase some soft drinks for her young kids. They’re physically unhurt but obviously hurt emotionally. You can only imagine what a child would go through watching their mom being murdered in front of them.”

Another victim, an adult man, was also struck by the gunfire and remains hospitalized in critical condition. It remains unknown whether he was part of the initial altercation or the intended target.
Martin, who was about to start a new chapter in her life by moving her family to a new home the day after the incident, leaves behind a grieving family. Describing her commitment to her children, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover funeral and burial expenses, assisting her children during this difficult time.
“Our hearts are shattered as we mourn the unimaginable loss of our beloved Shakeela Martin, who was taken from us far too soon at just 35 years old,” the fundraiser states.
Martin was remembered as a devoted mother who prioritized her children’s needs. The fundraiser also revealed that she had no life insurance.
