Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer, has decided to return for at least one more season. The Washington Capitals announced his re-signing on a one-year contract. This deal includes a $1 million salary, a $4.75 million games-played bonus for at least 10 games, and a $3.25 million signing bonus. The total cap hit stands at $4,250,000 according to Puckpedia.
Ovechkin expressed his enthusiasm in a statement: “I’m back! Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”
His decision to stay was expected by many. Earlier signs, like waving off the Pittsburgh Penguins’ handshake offer after what could have been his final game against them, suggested his return. Additionally, Ovechkin’s recent performance supports his decision. Despite being close to 41, he completed a 64-point season, playing all 82 games. He scored 32 goals and made 32 assists last season, proving he remains at a high level of play.
This new contract reflects a 50% pay cut for Ovechkin. This adjustment provides financial flexibility for the Capitals to make additional summer moves, like acquiring Boone Jenner and Alex Tuch.
