Stephen Vitale, CEO, and Rocco Vitale, President of Pyrotecnico, have shared their detailed planning for the upcoming record-breaking July 4th fireworks show in Washington, D.C. They have been preparing for six months, employing a team of 75 people to manage the logistics of launching 850,000 fireworks shells. This event will celebrate America250 in multiple locations.
As agencies prepare for America’s 250th birthday, they remain alert to potential threats during Fourth of July events. The Salute to America 250 Celebration in Washington, D.C., is expected to be one of the most patriotic displays ever, according to the White House. Over a million people are expected to attend the event on the National Mall to hear President Donald Trump speak and witness what is claimed to be the largest pyrotechnics display worldwide.
Jason Pack, a retired supervisory special agent with the FBI, noted that agencies have likely spent weeks or months preparing for this occasion. The government’s coordinated approach is crucial to avoid overlooking potential threats. He emphasized that no specific threats have been reported, but anything is possible, especially during significant events like July Fourth.
Massachusetts has already canceled a July 4th celebration due to inadequate public safety staffing. Pack highlighted the importance of heightened security both in Washington, D.C., and at smaller events across the country.
Paul Mauro, former NYPD Legal Bureau Commanding Officer, stressed the need for local law enforcement to engage with larger agencies like the FBI and Homeland Security to prevent tragedies. He cited the 2022 Highland Park shooting as a grim reminder of the risks involved during public celebrations.
Mauro further pointed out the dangers of vehicle-ramming attacks, such as the one in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 2021 when Darrell Brooks drove into a parade crowd. He emphasized the need for small towns to recognize these risks and prepare accordingly. Acknowledging potential threats is the first step in implementing security measures to protect the public.
In another incident, Sayfullo Saipov used a rented vehicle to target people at a New York City parade in 2017. The preemptive placement of barriers prevented a more substantial loss of life. Mauro highlighted how security measures and recognizing threats can thwart potential attacks.
Agencies and local police can collaborate effectively through fusion centers that facilitate the sharing of threat-related information. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the FBI. In case of an immediate threat, contacting 911 is crucial.
