LeBron James is departing from the Los Angeles Lakers, setting the stage for another significant decision. Sixteen years after his notable move from Cleveland to Miami, James is once again preparing to change teams. He informed the Lakers that his eight-year tenure with them has concluded, and he will compete in his record-extending 24th NBA season with a different team.
James has consistently expressed that his drive for winning more championships motivates his choices. This suggests he will likely join a team he believes can vie for an NBA title in 2027. Speculation suggests Golden State is a potential destination, although there is curiosity about potential returns to Cleveland or Miami, or perhaps a new destination like San Antonio, which features 7-foot-4 global talent Victor Wembanyama.
“I’ve done it all. I’ve seen it all,” James stated at the conclusion of the Lakers’ season in May. “Just being able to compete and trying to win championships, I think that’s a motivating factor.”
The first part of his decision is confirmed: he will play at least one more season, with his family, including his wife Savannah and daughter Zhuri, supporting this part of the plan.
His choice of team remains a pivotal moment in the NBA offseason, alongside other significant moves like Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade to Miami. The Lakers expressed gratitude to James for his contributions, especially during their 2020 championship win. Jeanie Buss, part of the Lakers’ ownership, highlighted his impact on the team and his record-breaking performances.
James’ intentions were initially reported by ESPN through his agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports. Discussions with new teams can officially begin once the free agency period commences after 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, with contracts finalized after July 6.
The prospect of James joining Golden State gained momentum when Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million option, providing the Warriors financial flexibility for roster adjustments. While Green might still return, his decision allows the team more options.
“Personally, I’m always willing to work with the team on whatever is best, especially at this point in my career,” Green commented on his podcast. “So my decision to opt out was for a few reasons. As you all know, I’ve always taken the approach of working with the organization. I’ve been in one place for 14 years. It’s more of a family to me than anything.”
James has significant ties with Golden State personnel, having faced the team four times with Cleveland in the NBA Finals, and maintains friendships with Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, and coach Steve Kerr. These connections were built further during the USA Basketball’s gold medal victory at the 2024 Paris Games.
During his eight years with the Lakers, James became an NBA champion in 2020 and broke numerous records, including becoming the NBA’s all-time points leader. His NBA career began with a seven-year stint in Cleveland, followed by four years with the Miami Heat, where he captured two championship titles. He returned to Cleveland before signing with the Lakers in 2018.
James, the NBA’s oldest active player at nearly 42 years old, is the first to reach 23 seasons and may again play with his son, Bronny James. Over his illustrious career, James has achieved 22 All-Star selections, 21 All-NBA mentions, four MVP awards, four Finals MVP titles, and was part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. In his last season, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, with career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists over 1,600 games.
