Los Angeles is gearing up for an intriguing mayoral runoff this November, with Mayor Karen Bass set to face off against City Council member Nithya Raman, according to NBC News projections. Both candidates are Democrats, with Raman being part of the Democratic Socialists of America. They emerged from an all-party primary that featured notable figures such as Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star and registered Republican.
Pratt ran a campaign focusing on criticizing Bass for her handling of the previous year’s wildfires in Los Angeles. Although initially in second place, support shifted in favor of Raman due to late-counted votes that leaned Democratic. This mirrors a broader trend seen throughout California’s primary elections.
Bass, previously a U.S. Congress member, secured her mayoral role in 2022 after a competitive race against real estate developer Rick Caruso. However, she faced criticism for being abroad during the devastating wildfires, which resulted in significant damage and resource shortages for firefighting efforts. A Los Angeles Times poll in March revealed that 56% of respondents held unfavorable views of Bass.
This criticism prompted Raman to enter the mayoral race, despite formerly endorsing Bass for re-election. Raman, who supported Bass in her City Council re-election bid for 2024, expressed frustration with inaction on crucial city issues during her campaign launch. She emphasized the need for transformative policy changes in areas like housing, homelessness, and basic services.
“My team and I have tried so hard to intervene aggressively on the most urgent issues that this city is facing,” said Raman.
Bass countered Raman’s narrative, asserting that Raman didn’t effectively utilize her City Council position to advocate for the necessary changes. During a debate at the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, Bass remarked, “The problem is that for you to act like you’re brand new or you’ve been on the outside is not accurate.”
On her campaign trail, Bass acknowledged the public’s dissatisfaction with issues such as homelessness and the wildfires while highlighting the progress made during her administration. Bass expressed confidence in her re-election chances, citing her lifelong dedication to Los Angeles.
“I appreciate you for believing in me… I have devoted my entire life to serving the city that I love,” Bass declared during her election night speech.
Bass faced challenges from both the left and right, with Pratt’s campaign drawing national attention partly due to his past MTV fame. Despite the lack of formal endorsement, former President Donald Trump expressed support for Pratt’s candidacy, appreciating his determination.
The shift to a Democrat-versus-Democrat runoff introduces a new dynamic to the race. A Los Angeles Times poll previously assessed these potential matchups, revealing that the contest between Bass and Raman might be closer than expected. Raman held a slight edge over Bass in the survey, though many respondents remained undecided, indicating a potentially volatile race come November.
