Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Near Cuba Felt in Florida

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the northwest coast of Cuba on Monday afternoon, causing reports of light tremors in parts of Florida, including South Florida. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake took place approximately 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, which lies to the west of Havana.

The USGS shared on X that shaking from this earthquake was indeed felt in Florida, where such seismic activities are infrequent. Following the earthquake, residents across Florida, from Tampa and Orlando to South Florida, reported feeling tremors. The City of Miami acknowledged the earthquake and noted that seismic activity was perceived in various parts of the city, leading to multiple service calls. City officials reported that Miami Fire-Rescue responded to all incidents, with no significant injuries or property damage reported. All calls were addressed without further complications.

The National Weather Service in Miami issued a post-earthquake update, assuring that there was no tsunami threat in South Florida. However, no additional information has been disclosed.

Previous Earthquake Experiences in Florida

Although rare, Florida has felt the effects of powerful regional earthquakes before. In January 2020, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the area south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, causing tremors felt in Miami and other parts of South Florida. At that time, a resident in Aventura recalled feeling light-headed and noticed the movement while sitting at their desk, with a coworker questioning if the building was swaying.
