Election Updates: Tight Races and Counting Process in California

The race for Los Angeles mayor took a significant turn as new vote counts showed a close contest among candidates. Former reality TV personality Spencer Pratt fell to third place, with hundreds of thousands of votes still pending. Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman leads him slightly, sitting in second place with 27.1% compared to Pratt’s 26.7% of the counted votes.

“Folks, we’re dealing with a fraction of a percentage point difference, there’s still hundreds of thousands of votes outstanding, and LA officials have given us the next 3 weeks to count! Let’s git-r-dun,” Pratt wrote on X.

In the tight race within Northern California’s 6th Congressional District, Republican Kevin Kiley, who swapped parties to run as an independent, garnered 25.4%, leading Democratic Richard Pan at 22.8% and Republican Michael Stansfield at 21.2%. Election officials haven’t called this race yet.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass secured a position for the November election, leading Nithya Raman and Spencer Pratt according to recent counts. Raman’s campaign expressed hope based on the latest results, crediting the support from numerous Angelenos powering her campaign. Bass’s spokesman criticized Raman’s policies, contouring his view on the future contest if Raman progressed to the runoff.

Election procedures remain active as mail-in ballots postmarked by June 2 will be processed through Tuesday. The latest estimate indicates approximately 368,000 ballots countywide left to count, reflecting how critical the outstanding votes are in these competitive races.

Professional Opinions

Pundits suggest Spencer Pratt faces an uphill battle to reclaim his position from Raman. Michael Trujillo, not affiliated with any candidate, noted Pratt’s slim chances of overtaking Raman.

“The trend is clear. She has been gaining on Pratt for the last three or four days. There is no reason to believe that will change. It is still close, but she is at this point more likely to be in the runoff than Pratt is,” remarked Zev Yaroslavsky, a former council member.

Political Claims

Comments from former President Trump alleging fraud in the vote counting process stirred controversy. Trump questioned Democrat Nithya Raman’s standing over Pratt, calling for scrutiny of the electoral process despite lacking evidence supporting his claims.

California Voting Process

California’s vote-counting procedures have come under fire for the slow pace, attributed to the variety of voting methods offered, from mail-in ballots to provisional ones. Election officials incorporate mechanisms ensuring all ballots are counted, extending the process over several weeks but stressing accuracy over speed.
