Carnival Cruise Line is implementing stricter dress codes for passengers visiting Lifou, a popular South Pacific destination. This move is to adhere to local customs, which differ from those on board.
Before the ship stopped in Lifou, located in New Caledonia, Carnival Splendor passengers were urged to respect local customs by dressing conservatively while ashore. The ship made this visit on June 2 during an eight-night journey from Sydney.
“We kindly ask guests to respect the local culture and rules in the ports we visit,” Carnival states in its dress code guidelines.
Restrictions include a ban on G-strings, thongs, monokinis, and mankinis. Topless sunbathing is also not permitted. These guidelines extend beyond beaches to public venues such as markets, churches, and community spaces.
Carnival’s website already advises travelers to respect local cultures at their destinations. They specifically mention Lifou, highlighting its conservative clothing requirements due to the island’s cultural and religious practices.
The cruise line warns that noncompliance with these customs might jeopardize future visits to Lifou. This enforcement reflects a broader trend of cruise lines emphasizing destination-specific rules.
