Military Training Exercises Generate Concern in Pasadena and Irvine

Military training exercises took place in Pasadena and Irvine on Wednesday night, causing concern among residents due to loud noises and the secrecy surrounding the operations. City officials had issued warnings to prepare residents for the disturbances expected as helicopters, controlled explosions, and simulated weapons fire occurred.

Long Beach and the City of Industry are set to experience similar activities on Thursday night. The exercises are planned to last until early morning, with noise potentially continuing until 2 a.m. in the east area of Long Beach. Police will be present to ensure safety for pedestrians and vehicles, while city statements emphasize operational confidentiality, refraining from disclosing further details on the training’s specifics.

Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian explained that these exercises are standard military drills conducted across the U.S. The city prioritized informing the public to avoid alarm, especially due to heightened sensitivities amid election week. Efforts were made to communicate warnings through multiple platforms, including social media, Nixle alerts, and reverse 911 calls.

The military activity in Pasadena used the old St. Luke Hospital building near Altadena Drive and Washington Boulevard. Although warnings were issued, some residents expressed distress over the unexpected loud noises and the lack of transparent information regarding the operations.
