The Cleveland Browns made a significant move in the National Football League (NFL) by trading the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, to the Los Angeles Rams. Garrett, who recently set a new single-season sack record, now joins an already strong Rams team. The Browns, on the other hand, must now adapt to life without Garrett for the first time since 2016.
Last year, Garrett requested a trade from the Browns, but the team decided to keep him by signing a four-year extension valued at $160 million. This extension was expected to keep Garrett with the Browns through the 2030 season. However, the offer from the Rams was too tempting to ignore. The Rams offered the Browns Jared Verse, the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year, along with a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round pick in 2029. Browns General Manager Andrew Berry stated the return was ‘too great’ to pass up.
“Myles Garrett is a foundational player, Hall of Fame-worthy, and a homegrown talent. Our intent was to have him remain with our team for his career,” Berry mentioned. “But some opportunities are unexpected and force a reassessment. This trade was such an opportunity.”
Garrett’s performance last season earned him the Defensive Player of the Year title for the second time. He recorded 23 sacks and has achieved double-digit sacks for eight consecutive seasons. In at least five of these seasons, he reached at least 14.0 sacks.
The Rams are gearing up for a stronger season, having recently extended quarterback Matthew Stafford’s contract. They also selected quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall draft pick. Meanwhile, Cleveland recently secured two first-round picks in April’s NFL Draft, selecting tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver K.C. Concepcion, and they now have two more first-round picks for next year.
Jared Verse has shown his talent by making the Pro Bowl in each of his first two NFL seasons. As an outside linebacker, he recorded 12.0 sacks and 22 tackles for loss.
