As travelers navigate airports, finding a comfortable spot can be a challenge. At Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Portal Lounge offers a fresh alternative for those seeking more than a basic waiting area. Launched by the founders of Gameway on May 28, Portal Lounge fuses gaming, dining, music, and cutting-edge design to create a social environment tailored for modern travelers.
High-Tech Features and Social Spaces
Created by Jordan and Emma Walbridge, Portal Lounge builds on their existing presence in nine U.S. airports, aiming to reach eleven locations by year’s end. Moving beyond traditional lounges known for silence, Portal Lounge stands out with its lively and tech-centered ambience. Covering 3,800 square feet, it offers space for about 114 people, featuring a futuristic entrance, dynamic lighting, and art deco décor.
Gaming Stations Redefine Waiting
The lounge’s standout feature is its gaming setup. With 17 stations equipped with Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and custom PCs, travelers can enjoy nearly 30 different titles. Adults aged 30 to 39, as the largest gaming demographic in the U.S., often look for enhanced airport experiences, making this feature highly appealing.
“Gameway really showed us how much travelers respond to environments that feel interactive and intentional,” Emma shared.
Portal Lounge aims to offer a welcoming and vibrant experience while delivering the comfort of a premium lounge, complete with a food and beverage program, music, and thoughtful design.
Robotic Bartender Adds a Visual Edge
One of the lounge’s unique offerings is a robotic bartender, developed in Italy. In conjunction with traditional bartenders, it prepares a variety of cocktails and mocktails, serving both as a practical feature and entertainment.
The use of technology from check-in to lighting enhances the overall user experience. Jordan Walbridge explained, “We wanted Portal Lounge to feel modern, social, and experiential.”
Food, Drinks, and Local Flair
The menu includes small plates and cocktails infused with local elements. Offerings such as the “Lag Free” margarita with Honeycrisp apple and the “Prince’s Lemonade” pay homage to Minnesota’s culture, helping travelers feel connected to the location.
A New Approach to Airport Lounges
Historically, airport lounges provided basic amenities, but expectations are changing. With crowded gate areas, travelers now seek more engaging options, making experiences like Portal Lounge more attractive. Accessible through Priority Pass and certain credit card programs, the lounge provides a valuable option, especially for those with extended waits.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, with its high passenger traffic, is an ideal setting for Portal Lounge. With many arriving passengers having additional time before boarding, the lounge offers a productive and enjoyable use of this period.
Enhancing Your Travel Experience
Portal Lounge’s goal is to transform airport time into an engaging part of the journey. By providing a blend of games, food, and music, it targets travelers looking for more than a routine waiting experience. While it’s not for everyone, those longing for a lively ambiance may find it highly appealing.
If you’re traveling through MSP, consider whether Portal Lounge could enhance your airport experience. With offerings that integrate entertainment and local culture, it sets the stage for a more interactive way to pass the time before your flight.
